City of Portland, PDC call on public to submit concepts for Memorial Coliseum
(Portland, Ore.) - The City of Portland and the Portland Development Commission (PDC) announced the opening of the call for concepts for the renovation or adaptive reuse of the Memorial Coliseum. Concepts may be submitted from Monday, Nov. 2 through Tuesday, Dec. 1 using the on-line application form. In December 2009, concepts will be analyzed by the 32-member Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC) based on the established evaluation criteria.
"As Chair of the advisory committee, I am pleased to announce that the concept submission phase of the Memorial Coliseum re-use process is now open," said Mayor Sam Adams. "The full list of concept criteria is available online, but some key elements for consideration include sustainability, connectivity, architectural preservation and honoring veterans. I look forward to the innovative and unique concepts Portlanders have to share."
Coliseum concepts must complement existing uses at the Rose Quarter as well as exemplify the future vision and urban design principles that have been developed for the area.
A public presentation of qualified concepts is slated for January 2010. While not a requirement at this phase, concepts that make it to the more formal proposal stage will be required to demonstrate the financial viability of the project and must have an experienced development team. Portland City Council will make a final decision on the future of the Coliseum in late spring 2010.
Additionally, in late spring 2010, Portland Arena Management (PAM) will lead a process to develop a community-supported development strategy for the surrounding Rose Quarter.
